Note

Listening

To listen closely is to notice not only the sound, but the decisions behind it.

Visual noteThree scales of listening
  1. 01 Whole

What feeling remains after the song?

  2. 02 Parts

How do rhythm, harmony, and voice support one another?

  3. 03 Gesture

Which small detail makes the moment live?

A song works as a whole, as an interaction of parts, and as a collection of tiny gestures.

The first listen

Do not analyze immediately. Let the song pass from beginning to end and notice where your breathing, attention, or sense of time changes.

The second listen

Now follow the bass, the form, the space, or the movement of the vocal. One question at a time reveals more than trying to hear everything.

Listen beyond your genre

An unfamiliar musical language loosens automatic expectations. It restores curiosity and expands the range of decisions available to you.
